French Dip Review: Bastion Brewing Company, Anacortes, WA

Their menu and FD.  I got the one with brisket.  I was a bit spooked by the term "BBQ au jus" which I would later come to fine was indeed just BBQ sauce, which was a major disappointment and slight.  No one messes with baby... I mean E's jus.

This looked like quite a sandwich.  I didn't order this one.  This is not the French dip.

So I sat at the bar.  I was there because my brother likes this place and I was getting him a little something something for Christmas.

This was the Hazy Pale, which was quite good; 4 of 5.  I liked it.  The bartender was friendly and did a good job.  There were quite a few patrons in the place.  It seemed like a popular local haunt.  Many restaurants have been in this place over the years, by the golf course.  I hope they will last a long time.
Brewery making stuff.  These seats would fill up more throughout my stay.

I had to walk over to another room to order my food, which surprised me a bit.  The food service was really slow.

Their menu and story.

You can see by this time I've ordered a second beer and my food got served. The barkeep selected a Winter Ale that he thought might pair well with my French dip.  At first glance I realized that the sandwich was quite small.  I wasn't impressed. The bread was "too white" for my tastes as well.  Getting a large cup of BBQ sauce for dipping is also not so much a delight.  There were orange skewers in use, which I enjoyed but otherwise I was skeptical of what I was about to receive.

There is it.  Not a ton of meat.  And the bread, like I said, was too white. And it's just not too large of a half-sand.

A close-up of the BBQ sauce "jus".  zzzzzzzzzzzzz

The baked beans I got as a side dish.  Their flavor was "sweet", which I didn't enjoy.  The quality seemed reasonably high but I didn't so much love the flavor.  Not bad, just not what I wanted.
A view of the 'burnt ends' on the sandwich.  The sandwich alone was meh.  Not too tasty.  Lower bread slice too hard.

Another view of the sandwich while being eaten.  Some fat in the brisket, which was fine.  Just not overly tasty.

The "Money Shot" but it's just with BBQ sauce. :(

Another view of the sandwich.  Maybe the bread was too dense?

So I didn't love that sandwich.  The place was fine and the beers were good.  I headed to my family home on the big island of G...

Where one might literally believe that the ferry is called NO SMOKING.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.  Thanks Bastion Brewing for my first visit.  I won't be getting the French Dip again any time soon.  It's not a proper FD.  Please change the jus and bread.

Raw Notes.
Beer
.Hazy Pale. 4. Quite good.
. Jolly Pig Winter Ale. 4. Also quite good. Spiced.
Food
. Baked beans.
.. Flavor. 2. Too sweet.
. French dip. 2. Expense, hard, small, lackluster beef, not real jus.
..Size. 2. Small.
..Bread. 3. Too hard and crunchy, homemade but plain.
.. Sandwich alone. 3. Fine. Small, too crunchy. Dry.
...Skewers. 4. Orange skewers.
..Jus. 2. Not jus.
.. Meat. 3. Not notable.
... Flavor. 2. Fine
..Non-Meat Toppings. There were none.
. Baked beans.
Location. 3. Whatever.
Service
.Speed. 2. Very slow.
. Ordering. 2. Odd. Had to go order separately then they delivered to the bar.

Summary: The "crouton bread" and the au jus because it was not au jus did not save the too-crunchy bread. For me it was just an overwhelming BBQ sauce forward taste and nothing like a French dip sandwich, really. And the beef did not play a prominent role.

Emory's Whiskey BBQ Burger Dip in Everett, WA

I was out with my wife and her family and we went to one of my favorite places in Everett, which has a really great French dip.  And I saw that they have a burger dip as well.  So I proceeded.

Their menu cover.

Our view.

Jeremy, Edison, Nicole and Jessica.

Our partially outdoor dining arrangements.

Edison busy at play.

Sorry it is tilted.  Lo, we can see broccolini, a rich bbq sauce jus, a large sandwich with lots of beef and cheese well-toasted.
We see rich, thick BBQ sauce, good-looking beef and visible herbs on the sandwich.  We are generally impressed and happy.

I think it was gouda.  Creamy.  Rich.  It's making my mouth water thinking about it.

Perfectly prepared broccolini.

The money shot.  Looks really herby and beefy and rich.  It was.

Detailed Tasting Notes

Very thick size.
BBQ sauce indeed.  Rich.
Looks good.
Big size.
Well Toasted bread.  Good.
Great sandwich/burger alone, chewy 5 of 5.
Thick, nice burger. 5 of 5 on meat.
Great bread.  Yum!!
Smoked gouda gets a 5 of 5.  One of my if not my favorite cheeses.
Gouda could have been better melted so could lose a point there.
Warm, spicy, vinegary jus, thick 3 of 5 only.  I prefer au jus.
Bread needs jus when it ran out of toppings.  Some strikes.
Toasted flavor 5 of 5.
Perfect all dente salty, fresh veggies.  Yum.
BBQ sauce shouldn't be labeled Au Jus.  Shame on them.  Strikes.
Good onions present.
Is there bacon on it?  It's good.
Meat 5, big, flavorful, chewy, dense.
Gouda and toastedness is the signature.
Oil sheen on jus, great flavor, salt, rich, hot.

Overall a delight.  5 of 5.  Go Emory's!

5 of 5 DeliciScore™ (From Heaven) Awarded to Tub's Gourmet Subs for their Turkey into BBQ Sandwich in Lynnwood, WA on this 9th day of April, 2015 - The Firecracker (Chicken-Bacon-BBQ Sauce)

I found myself at Tubs Gourmet Subs in Lynnwood, WA on a Saturday with my buddy Brian A.  We were out car shopping (Audi and Nissan that day) and needed to grab some grub.  I searched Foursquare for recommendations nearby and it suggested Tubs and Brian agreed, so we went there.  I'd never been.  I wasn't expecting a French dip extravaganza, but I couldn't help myself.  They have other French-dip and French dip platform-like items on their menu:

Other choices I didn't get that day:
JOKER'S DIP
Mayo, ham, turkey, roast beef, bacon, and cheddar cheese; toasted on a baguette, topped with lettuce and tomato. Served with hot BBQ sauce for dipping.

FRENCH DIP
Roast beef and your choice of cheese; toasted on a buttered baguette. Served with hot au jus.

HOT PEPPER BURGER DIP
Garlic mayo, jalapeños, sautéed onions, housemade black bean patty, fire seasoning, cheddar cheese; toasted on a baguette and served with hot BBQ sauce.

Here's what I ordered--and was happy with:

FIRECRACKER
Garlic mayo, firecracker seasoning, jalapeños, chicken, bacon, and jack cheese; toasted on a baguette, topped with lettuce, tomato and ranch dressing. Served with hot (temperature) BBQ sauce for dipping.

This is a VERY LARGE sandwich and needs to be for the > $10.00 price tag at a deli sandwich place!

Very good, hearty tomatoes.  The garlic mayo was good.  Good chicken.  Tasty sandwich!!!

Jalepeno, lettuce, good (and lots of) bread

The BBQ sauce for dipping.  Nothing to write home about but it was served hot so this qualifies as a French dip platform sandwich.

The chicken, cheese.

Comments:

Sandwich
The bread was great.
The sandwich alone was a 5 of 5 and then you dip it into BBQ sauce caliente and it is just great.  So flavorful!!!  Tomatoes were good and big.  It was spicy with the jalepenos but not too spicy.  It definitely had a garlicky flavor (which was very good in this case).  There was mayo on in it and Brian thought maybe too much.  -1 point for that but I'm not complaining.  The overall size of the sandwich was HUGE.  It had bacon, lettuce and cheese on it and was doused with some really tasty--and attractive--seasoning salt that added to the flavor.  Lots of sodium here but not a complaint for an FD fan.

Dipping
BBQ sauce was temperature hot and served in Styrofoam, so that was nice.  The BBQ sauce was good and zesty.

The Meat: 5 -- Didn't really think about it, just overall great taste
The Bread: 4 -- Lots and it was good
The Au Jus: 4 -- It was BBQ sauce so I really can't brag on it too much
The Portion: 5 -- Huge
Overall: 5 -- This is a really great sandwich with or without the BBQ sauce for dipping.  Jalepenos and garlic mayo make it great.
